Káva was founded in 1996, as one of the first Theater in Education companies in the region. In the past 21 years, we have had the luck to create several performances and further projects for nearly 90.000 participants altogether. (Hungary is a small country, if we count with today’s population data, every 108,5th Hungarian has been to our programs.)
We define our work by the term of Theatre of the Participant. Our method uses complex Theater in Education as its bases, yet gives it a very unique site by adding current social problems to its focus. We define our work as art, having a strong social focus. Its complexity lies in the way of meaningful interaction, opened questions, and putting emphasis on the different points of views.
Apart from performances – that we have about 120 a theatrical season-, we also have long-term drama projects and community based projects, that we think of as social intervention as well as a work of art.
In these 21 years, we have had the luck to participate in international projects with wonderful partners, and we wish to keep going with this work.
Examples of our international projects:
DICE – international research project about drama’s effect on Lisbon key competences (see more on www.dramanetwork.eu)
DAPHNE project – art project together with Sigma Art, Romania and Theatre Tsvete, Bulgaria – about school violence
BIPOLAR project – art project together with Schaubühne, Berlin, with participating underprivileged Roma kids
TRIP AROUND THE ONIONSKIN – common interactive theatrical project with Kompani13, Norway about creating a Peer Gynt-based interactive performance for high school students
We have been long-term members of IDEA (International Drama and Theatre in Education Association) and ASSITEJ (Association Internationale du Théâtre de l’Enfance et la Jeunesse).
We are happy to…
… teach.
Káva’s company contains some of the most experienced Theater in Education, community based art and theaterpedagogy professionals. In the past years, we have had studytrips from several groups from abroad, such as: Bergen University College, Norway; SVČ Lužánky Brno, Czech Republic; Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts and Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic; University of Wisconsin, United States; CITD, United States… and the list goes on. We are more than happy to have groups to see our work, to lead them workshops and provide a full program for their stay. At the same time, we are also really happy to travel ourselves, we have led workshops and trainings in several conferences and art institutions about our method and how it can be used in further profession.
… perform at festivals.
In interaction, the language barrier might seem scary on the first sight. However, in the past 21 years we have had the luck to gain experience in that matter and we believe that for any festivals, we are able to handle the obstacles. Our performances are unique in many ways, we are happily sending you performance records and materials if you ask for them.
… apply for grants together for artistic projects.
In artistic terms, we are very interested in cooperations that have either interaction, audience development, art for the youth and children, Theater in Education or drama education in focus. With our award-winning management, we are able to handle the complicated grants in administrative and financial terms.
